Will Smith’s surprise appearance at Coachella threw it back to his 1990s days, before the actor’s fall from grace after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
The 55-year-old joined J Balvin for the epic performance of his hit single Men in Black from the 1997 movie of the same name. The Oscar winner and former rapper, 38, teamed up to thrill the crowd at the first instalment of the two-weekend festival. Will Smith even dressed up as his character, James Darell Edwards III – or Agent J – for the set. He wasn’t alone, backup dancers dressed as aliens stormed the stage as well as other performers who took on roles as fellow secret agents in the music number.

Will Smith’s comeback at Coachella marks five years after his last performance at the popular Californian event in 2019. Previously, he joined his son on stage, Jaden, and they performed their song Icon.
It’s his first step on the stage since the 2022 Oscars slap with Chris Rock, after the comedian made a jibe about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.
Jada and Jaden Smith were there to support their dad Will, after the 25-year-old youngster performed with Justin Bieber at Coachella the day before – and received a kiss on the neck.
Will dived into the Hollywood blockbuster’s plot for the song, with Balvin being ‘taking away’ by two agents and dragged off-stage.
Then Smith holds up the neuralyzer device to eras memories of the crowd who witnessed it.
The film stormed the Box Office almost 30 years ago, making $250m in the US. It led to three sequels, with Smith starring in Men in Black II in 2002 and Men in Black 3 10 years later.
The star didn’t feature in the fourth instalment, Men in Black: International, but Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson made the cut.

Will Smith fans are over the moon after seeing the rapper-turned actor take to the stage once more.
