We’ve all had one too many drinks before and woken up doing things we can’t remember, and for Britney Spears, that happened to be getting married drunk in Vegas.
On New Year’s Eve 2004, the music star took a trip to Vegas to marry childhood friend Jason Alexander, and in her new memoir, The Woman in Me, the Toxic singer has admitted to having no memory of the event the next day, and the five words she uttered when her family told her what had happened.
Britney Spears’ five words after finding out she got married in Vegas
Although she doesn’t remember much, recalling how she felt at the time of the shotgun wedding, Britney Spears wrote: “People have asked me if I loved him. To be clear: he and I were not in love,” the memoir reads. “I was just honestly very drunk and probably, in a more general sense at that time in my life, very bored.”
The next morning, her family arrived in Sin City, and after being informed of what had gone down the night before, the star responded: “We were just having fun.”
She then goes on to write how her family made “such a big deal out of innocent fun.”
“They made way too big of a deal out of innocent fun. Everybody has a different perspective on it, but I didn’t take it that seriously. I thought a goof-around Vegas wedding was something people might do as a joke,” she penned.
The trip didn’t end well for the star, as she reveals she cried the rest of the time she was there, due to her family’s reaction.
“Then my family came and acted like I’d started World War III. I cried the whole rest of the time I was in Las Vegas.”
The couple wasn’t married for much longer, however, as her family told her she needed to get an annulment. Within just under three days (55 hours) all the paperwork was signed and the two were no longer wed.
The memoir, which is out today (October 24) sees Britney opens up about all aspects of her life in the memoir, including her breakup from Justin Timberlake, and the reason for shaving her head a year before her conservativeship.
Britney got married two more times after Vegas
Although her first marriage lasted less than three days, the star then got married two more times after that, which lasted a lot longer.
That same year she got an annulment from Alexander, and she married her second husband, Kevin Federline. The two married after just three months of dating and went on to have two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
The couple then split three years later in 2007.
She remained unmarried until 2022, when she married her long-term boyfriend, Sam Asghari. The pair first met in 2016 and tied the knot six years later.
However, the relationship did not last long after that as they divorced just a year later.
